Description - summary of the module content

Module description

How can you record and manipulate the quantities of different goods in your company warehouse? How can you find out whether your rival company is telling the truth about their products without taking them all to pieces? How high will your fireworks go before they turn and fall back onto the amazed onlookers? How does changing one small thing affect all the other things dependent on it? Mathematics is used to answer these questions. In this module you will learn how to describe, understand and represent situations both graphically and algebraically and draw conclusions from these. You will learn how to manipulate and solve different types of equations to find unknown values, how to make decisions and how to find the best decision from a set of different possibilities.  

 

This is not a course for beginners: students taking this course should already have good knowledge of mathematics which will be checked at the beginning of the course. 

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to provide a foundation in mathematics for students who intend to follow a degree programme in the area of Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, Science, Medicine or other related disciplines.

  1. Numbers: natural number, integer, rational number, irrational number, real number, fractions, modulus. Decimal places and significant figures. Scientific notation.  

  1. Estimation, absolute and relative answers.  

  1. Algebra.   

  1. Functions. 

  1. Coordinate Geometry in two dimensions.  

  1. Optimisation 

  1. The exponential and logarithmic functions. 

  1. Differentiation.  

  1. Integration.  

  1. Numerical determination of integrals using the trapezium rule. 

  1. Numerical solution of equations.  

  1. Statistics and Probability 

  1. The Normal Distribution.

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for reasons judged legitimate by the Mitigation Committee, the applicable assessment will normally be deferred. See ‘Details of reassessment’ for the form that assessment usually takes. When deferral occurs, there is ordinarily no change to the overall weighting of that assessment.  

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to take a re-sit exam (open book). Only your performance in this exam will count towards your final module grade. A grade of 40% will be awarded if the examination is passed.
