Description - summary of the module content

Module description

This module explores the bases of mind and behaviour?as well as?the basic?physiology?and functioning of?the?human body. You will?look at some of the main theories in psychology and their application.?Psychology topics include?defining and measuring?intelligence and?explaining and treating?certain?mental illnesses.?Physiology?gives an overview of body systems and how they interact to?maintain?the complete organism, for example,?the nervous system, control systems?and?the?fight or flight response.?We also focus on methods of research and?associated?ethical?issues.? 

Module aims - intentions of the module

1. This module aims to provide a foundation in key concepts of psychology as well as develop essential knowledge and understanding of different human body systems and how they relate to each other.  

2. It aims to prepare students for further academic study at a UK university through a focus on a) learning how to conduct and navigate published research, and b) taking a self-directed and enquiry-based approach to learning

  • 1. Compare and evaluate various theoretical approaches used to explain human behaviour
  • 2. Demonstrate an understanding of several key topics and classic studies in psychology
  • 3. Research a given psychological topic in depth with tutor support
  • 4. Describe the systems of the human body which are associated with particular functions and their interrelationship with other systems
  • 5. Describe the effects of named diseases and medications on the human body with particular emphasis on the body systems targeted.
  • 6. Evaluate data and reports associated with functioning of the body systems

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 7. Describe and begin to evaluate aspects of knowledge in the medical and social sciences with reference to data sources outside of lectures
  • 8. Analyse, interpret, and evaluate experimental methods and results
  • 9. Demonstrate some awareness of ethical issues in treating human conditions and in conducting psychological research

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for reasons judged legitimate by the Mitigation Committee, the applicable assessment will normally be deferred. See ‘Details of reassessment’ for the form that assessment usually takes. When deferral occurs, there is ordinarily no change to the overall weighting of that assessment.?? 

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to take a re-sit exam. Only your performance in this exam will count towards your final module grade. A grade of 40% will be awarded if the examination is passed.?
