Description - summary of the module content
Module description
The module will provide you with essential skills for undertaking academic study through the medium of English. You will cover the key areas of Academic English: Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. This is a standalone module that may lead to your progression to higher level Academic English studies. It also forms part of the SAWE programme. After having completed this module, you should have increased your ability in spoken and written language sufficiently to enable progression to the relevant next stage of your studies.
Module aims - intentions of the module
- To improve the language levels of students to the equivalent of B2.
- To enable students to progress on to their favoured progression programme;
- To build skills in using online technology for independent learning;
- To build confidence in the use of English language in both an academic and social environment

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...
- 1. Show comprehension of spoken texts up to B2 (upper-intermediate) level.
- 2. Identify with some ease the main points and details of authentic spoken English, including academic English.
- 3. Interact and communicate at B2 (upper-intermediate) level
- 4. Use the features of spoken English to exchange, check and confirm meaning fluently, with precision and appropriate detail, and formality on academic topics.
- 5. Argue a formal position convincingly.
- 6. Show comprehension of written texts up to B2 (upper-intermediate) level.
- 7. Read an extensive range of graded, semi-authentic and authentic texts on general, academic and subject-related topics.
- 8. Demonstrate a wide range of reading strategies that allow them to read these texts with very good fluency and detailed understanding.
- 9. Produce written work up to B2 (upper-intermediate) level.
- 10. Follow academic conventions
- 11. Write extended academic texts using a wide range of language and structures.
- 12. Show informed consideration of the issues, and express a logical and clearly developed position
