Description - summary of the module content

Module description

The module will provide you with essential skills for undertaking academic study through the medium of English. You will cover the key areas of Academic English: Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. This is a standalone module that may lead to your progression to higher level Academic English studies. It also forms part of the SAWE programme. After having completed this module, you should have increased your ability in spoken and written language sufficiently to enable progression to the relevant next stage of your studies.

Module aims - intentions of the module

  • To improve the language levels of students to the equivalent of CEFR B2+.
  • To enable students to progress on to their favoured progression programme;
  • To build skills in using online technology for independent learning;
  • To build confidence in the use of English language in both an academic and social environment

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 1. Show comprehension of spoken texts up to B2+ (upper-intermediate/advanced) level.
  • 2. Identify with relative ease the main points and details of authentic spoken English, including on abstract, complex academic topics.
  • 3. Interact and communicate at B2+ (upper-intermediate/advanced) level
  • 4. Use the features of spoken English to present and debate abstract, complex academic topics fluently, with precision, detail and formality.
  • 5. Respond to questions, comments and counter argument spontaneously and appropriately.
  • 6. Show comprehension of written texts up to B2+ (upper-intermediate/advanced) level.
  • 7. Read graded and authentic materials on various specialisms extensively.
  • 8. Demonstrate a full range of reading strategies that allow them to read these texts fluently and with complete understanding.
  • 9. Produce written work up to B2+ (upper-intermediate/advanced) level.
  • 10. Produce a research project using a full range of language and structures
  • 11. Answer a research question in a logical and balanced way.
