Module description

This module will introduce students to the main management theories, tracing the development of management and applying the various theories to contemporary situations using relevant business case studies. The teaching of the module emphasises the ethics of managing business within an organisation’s wider responsibilities to society and key stakeholders.     

 

This module is equivalent to BEM1023 and BEM1028. No prior knowledge of Management is necessary for this module. 

Module aims - intentions of the module

The module aims to: 

 

  • Introduce students to management and organisational concepts, linking relevant theory. 

  • Recognise different perspectives of management and appreciate the implications that each has for managers, organisations, and other stakeholders.  

  • Examine the formulation and implementation of business strategy.  

  • Explain the main management issues in managing people; organisational structure; organisational culture; managing change and operations management. 

  • Students will learn transferrable skills in presenting, conducting independent research, collaborative working, problem solving, critical thinking, and reflective writing.

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for reasons judged legitimate by the Mitigation Committee, the applicable assessment will normally be deferred. See ‘Details of reassessment’ for the form that assessment usually takes. When deferral occurs there is ordinarily no change to the overall weighting of that assessment. 

 

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to take a re-sit exam. Only your performance in this exam will count towards your final module grade. A grade of 40% will be awarded if the examination is passed.
