International Year One

Please note that the 'Academic Requirement' mentioned in each section below is the overall average of all your modules except English, which is considered separately for progression to the University of Exeter. You don't need to have the same overall grade in each module to meet that requirement.

Also, compulsory modules are only included in the INTO courses which have optional or non-condonable modules (besides English). So, if it says 'None' in the 'Compulsory Modules' section it means that ALL the modules are compulsory (because there are no optional modules) and/or that there are no non-condonable modules besides English (which is always non-condonable).

Pathways

Students on the IYO Business pathways are able to progress to the programmes noted in the table below 'with Industrial Experience' (WIE) or 'with Study Abroad' as an option. If they choose the 'with Industrial Experience' option the progression requirements will be 60% academic average and 60% in any compulsory modules (instead of 55%), and 65% in English.

In addition, applicants to 'with Industrial Experience' (WIE) degrees will need to complete the WIE Intensive Programme (in May for C1 and in August for C2), which will be delivered by the Business School Careers Team. More information will be given to the IYOB students in a dedicated workshop in Term 1. These students will also need to meet a minimum of 50% overall in the assessment of the WIE Intensive Programme to be able to progress to their chosen WIE degree.

Please Note: Students who do not achieve the additional WIE requirements but achieve the standard non-WIE requirements at final results will be offered a change of programme to the non-WIE version of their degree at final results, so that they can still progress to the University of Exeter.

If you apply for an MEng degree you will need to meet additional academic requirements over stages 1 and 2, which will be assessed by the Engineering Department at the end of your second year of study at the University.

If you are on an Integrated Pathway (meaning that you have a combined offer for both your INTO programme and your University degree programme), you will already have an offer from the University and won't need to complete a UCAS application. However, this will only apply to a few students (usually no more than 20 for IYO) who do Engineering courses. We will also contact these students separately, so that they know that they do not have to complete their UCAS application like the other IYOE students. These students' progression requirements will be the same as those listed below, depending on the degree to which they will progress at the University of Exeter.

The Integrated Pathways are the following:

  • BEng Civil Engineering with International Year One
  • BEng Electronic Engineering with International Year One
  • BEng Engineering with International Year One
  • BEng Engineering and Management with International Year One
  • BEng Mechanical Engineering with International Year One

Transfer to BSc Biological Sciences with Professional Placement requires a Stage 1 (IYO) academic average of 65% (not including the English module). For transfer to the other possible variants (BSc Biological Sciences with Study Abroad, BSc Biochemistry with Industrial Experience, and BSc Biochemistry with Study Abroad) the student requires a Stage 1 academic average of 60%. Transfer requests should be made upon completion of Stage 1 (IYO) once marks are known. The student should discuss transfers with their personal tutor and then contact the Peter Chalk Info Point. There is also guidance on the hub’s ‘Changes to Study’ web pages.

For Penryn pathways, transfer requests should be made early in Year 2. All students will be invited to attend meetings to hear about Professional Placement and Study Abroad programmes, and if they still want to transfer, they will be told how and when to do this at that point. Transfers will only be allowed if (a) students have achieved 60% academic average in Year 1 (IYO) and (b) if they have secured a work placement or a place at a host institution (which they apply for in Term 1 of their second year). However, places may be limited on the Study Abroad programmes.

If students have any questions about the above, they should contact the Penryn Biosciences Director of Education, Chris Laing, at C.G.Laing@exeter.ac.uk.

Please note that IYOP students cannot apply for MSci Applied Psychology through UCAS, as it is not one of their agreed progression routes. However, you can apply for BSc Psychology, and once you are in your third year you will be able to apply for a change of programme to MSci Applied Psychology directly from the Psychology Department. To be accepted you will have additional requirements, including an interview, and you will probably need to have an average of at least 65% in your undergraduate degree as well. So, it is not guaranteed that your change of programme will be accepted.

Please do NOT apply for BSc Psychology with Professional Placement through UCAS. This is a highly competitive progression route and places will be limited, so be aware that there is no guarantee that you will be accepted. Students who are interested in this degree will have to do a workshop (advertised by the Psychology Department and taking place at the end of Term 1 in the second year) and write 250 words about their motivation for applying and wanting to do the placement degree, in addition to the progression requirements mentioned above. Students would also need to meet the equivalent of 2:1 average (60% minimum) at the end of their first year of study (and potentially their second year at the University too). Please contact the Psychology Department if you are interested in this variant.
