The Solutions Delivery function ensures delivery of new IT services and digital products in order to meet the strategic goals of our Colleges and Professional Services. The function encompasses both in-house development and third-party delivery services across the entire project and development life cycles.

As the Solutions Delivery team we leverage collective knowledge, technology, methodologies, partnerships and new ways of working to develop solutions, deliver programmes and projects. Completed on time, on budget and to specification.

We proactively find and capitalise on opportunities for IT-led innovation and the creative configuration of applications and platforms to support education, research and professional services.

Our teams

Solutions Delivery consists of four functions each playing a vital part of our technology and digital delivery:

The Research IT Services provide specialist IT support to academics, working closely with Service Management to ensure non-specialist queries are captured and resolved by the Customer Services teams. A collaborative community of specialist IT support brokering and translating the use of new technologies, working with the University’s Technical Services teams to provide local support for research and specialist teaching. Research IT Services deliver bespoke IT solutions that allow research groups to achieve the exceptional, winning grants by professional and tailored IT submissions, which are then delivered alongside research groups and communities to achieve the full impact. Research IT Services will build trust with College disciplines and, alongside IT Business Partners, deliver first class solutions for the research and specialist teaching community. These solutions will include shared IT services to support cross discipline research activities such as High Performance Computing.

Our Project Management Office (PMO) function defines and maintains the standards of project management within IT. It feeds the various governance groups with pipeline (ideas) information and manages the overall IT programme. It applies PRINCE and MSP to an appropriate level as required by governance and programme. The

PMO uses Planview to provide an absolute source of programme truth, optimising the IT programme and project management processes/tools to ensure the delivery of outcomes and benefits that support the University's strategic goals, whilst reconciling supply and demand to ensure only projects are started that the IT service and business has the capacity to see through to completion.

The Test & Release function tests and deploys services built by Solutions Delivery and its partners to the customer's requirements and within frameworks as specified by Strategy & Architecture. It establishes effective deployment of the service in the operational environment in order to deliver value to the customer.

The function will adapt, test and release processes to support Agile and Waterfall development of applications and ensure customer requirements are recognised throughout the test and release process. The Test & Release function manages suitable levels of documentation to support the deployment of services into the live environment and aid future development.

The function will always strive to minimise outages to the live environment caused by IT change, all test environments are under the governance of the Test & Release function. The function is also responsible for the Change Advisory Board (CAB) processes, coordinating a manner to ensure the new service is delivered to the requirements of the business, and the integrity of the live environment is protected.

Corporate and Academic Systems

The Corporate & Academic Systems function develops the University's academic, business and research applications, liaises with vendors to provide 3rd line tasks, as well as supports Service Management and business system teams to resolve business issues and events.

The function seeks to minimise the amount of bespoke development required of COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) solutions by maximising the use of existing functionality while working with suppliers to recognise requirements in future versions and releases. The function will also build strong user and developer communities to assist in directing funds and effort for required developments. The function constantly reviews the market for the best applications based on cost and quality.

Data Integration & Collaborative Digital Environment (DICE)

The Data Integration & Collaborative Digital Environment function develops innovative IT solutions to business problems and opportunities utilising existing digital applications and platforms and improves the understanding of information technologies and how they can be optimised to achieve business goals.

The function implements new infrastructure solutions using a full range of external and internal options including in a hybrid mix. The function will offer 3rd line support for applications, digital assets, audio visual and data solutions.

The DICE function innovates, challenging existing ways of working and supporting business transformation through new products and services. It will quickly adapt to user feedback and actively monitor the digital assets it deploys. The function creates rich intuitive user experiences, effortless in their access and operation.
