Student wardens hit the streets

Ten students have been recruited as Community Wardens by the University of Exeter.

They keep an eye on community relations and student welfare in key Exeter wards where most students live.

A pair of part-time wardens will work in each ward of St James, St Davids, Polsloe, Newtown and Pennsylvania.

This project was launched last year as a pilot by the University working in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and Exeter Community Safety Partnership. This year’s wardens continue the good work started in last year’s pilot scheme. In a recent community survey carried out by the University and Student’s Guild, 87.5% of respondents were aware of Community Wardens’ work.

Community Wardens’ tasks include providing information on recycling and rubbish collections, working with the Police to advise on home security, and getting neighbours together. The ten students appointed are on a variety of courses and ages, and most have also done some sort of voluntary activity in the city.

This year’s wardens are:

Rory Cunningham, Community Liaison Officer for the University of Exeter says: “Our community wardens act as an essential link between students and the community. They are literally our eyes and ears in neighbourhoods with high student numbers, and help ease neighbourly harmony as well as provide essential information. I look forward to working with this team this academic year.”

Wardens wear dark green jackets with reflective ‘Community Warden’ lettering.  To arrange a meeting with a local warden contact Rory Cunningham on 01392 264686.
