CCNER workshop in Multi-level Data Structures in Cross-National Electoral Research

A workshop organised by the ESRC funded Comparative Cross-National Electoral Research project.

The workshop is aimed at providing training and support for postgraduate research students working with cross-national survey data.

Event details

One of the challenges in cross-national electoral research is the analysis of macro and contextual data linked with individual level survey data. For example linkages can be at the country level, e.g., national competitiveness, or at lower levels of aggregation such as constituency level competitiveness. Linking these levels of analysis raises the issues of methods of analysis. Techniques that take into account the multi-level structure of the data have been adapted and applied in cross-national electoral research over the past 15 years.

The workshop is aimed at providing training and support for postgraduate research students working with cross-national survey data. There are two objectives. First, we explore the latest techniques and offer practical experience in applying these. These techniques include: categorical data analysis; time series analysis with repeated cross-sections; use of graphical techniques to display results with cross-national data. Second, we seek to support the research and training of post-graduate students working in the area of comparative electoral research. The workshop will have a strong practical focus on allow researchers to present research and receive feedback from experts working in the area of cross-national electoral research and data linking. We are seeking paper proposals from research students working in the area of comparative electoral behaviour who link data across units and or levels. For example, papers linking media content data to survey data or candidate data to data on political party manifestos would be welcome.

Please note that a number of bursaries are available for PGR students.
