EUC Exeter Branch: The Roman Army in Devon Talk

A talk by alumnus and archaeologist John Allan.

Following the exciting discovery of a Roman legionary fortress buried under the centre of modern Exeter, a series of major archaeological finds have been made over the last 40 years in rural Devon. The lecture will show how these discoveries have transformed our knowledge of the Roman armys conquest of Devon. Much can now be said about the layout, buildings and defences of the mighty fortress, and the lives of the legionary soldiers within it. In rural Devon a network of smaller forts, signal stations and roads is now known, suggesting that the Roman army met considerable resistance when it arrived in the county.
