Current Issues in Research Ethics: Researching Addictive Behaviour

The first of a series of events addressing current topics in research ethics.

Event details

What is the event about?

Dr Lee Hogarth and Dr Celia Morgan will provide an introduction to their work, exploring the relationship between addiction and human behaviour, and provide an opportunity to discuss the ethical constraints inherent in their research design.

Presenters:

Dr Lee Hogarth is an experimental psychologist studying the psychological mechanisms underpinning addiction and treatment.

Over the past 2 years, Dr Hogarth has formed a partnership with the third sector charity EDP which holds circa £6 million in public service contracts to deliver drug and alcohol interventions in the community and prisons.

Lee will describe the building of this external partnership, and some of the benefits and limitations of engaged research.

Dr Celia Morgan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter’s Psychology department interested in the effects of drugs and alcohol on the brain and behaviour.

Working alongside the charity EDP on the Exeter Translational Addiction Partnership, Celia’s research has concentrated on examining both the positive and negative effects of recreational drugs on cognition.

Following these presentations there will be a question and answer session and a discussion of the ethical considerations which are involved in this area of research.
