Comprising a public inquiry simulation, this workshop invites students aged 16-18 to engage with a cutting-edge social science question: how does society view the victims of rape and sexual abuse? And do we need a wider investigation into the lack of criminal prosecutions for these crimes?
The reporting of sexual offences has barely been out of the limelight over the last two years from the Saville situation, to the recent Ched Evans case, but of particular interest in this environment is the rise of female complainants that are turned away by the police in England and Wales.
This is a vital civic issue: is there a harmful institutional bias to adjudicate upon claims of sexual assault according to a pre-conceived standard of credibility?
Upon hearing expert evidence, the audience will address this very question of public accountability and the possibility of police failure to properly investigate reported cases of rape.
