Anyone is welcome to attend this open event which forms part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Being Human festival.

What is the event about?

Join us at the Helston Museum for Modern folk: traditional culture and community in the South West, an evening of short academic talks, literary readings, and music with acclaimed folk singer Jim Causley.

During the event we will look at the many ways in which folk traditions, stories, and songs inform and enrich our modern life.

University of Exeter Penryn Campus academics will lead short discussions on the following topics:

  • Professor Nick Groom: English seasons and Cornish customs
  • Professor Marion Gibson: Dark Cornwall: encountering the Celtic village
  • Dr Rob Smith: The haunting power of undiscovered rural England
  • Dr Jim Kelly: Charles Causley's haunted Lauceston: the ballad and the folk
  • Jim Causley: Songs from 'Cyprus Well: A Tribute to Charles Causley'
