Event details

In November and December 2015 nearly 200 nations gathered in Paris to agree a new global agreement on climate change, aimed at reducing global greenhouse emissions and thus avoiding the threat of dangerous climate change. President Obama said that this pact is ‘the best chance we have to save the one planet that we have’. The Paris pact aims to curb global warming to less than 2°C by the end of the century, and whilst this is widely welcomed as an aspiration, scientists question how feasible it will be to achieve.

Current science indicates that a global increase in temperature of only 2°C could have significant impacts for the Earth. What are the consequences of exceeding this limit? What would the world look like with 4°C or even 6°C warming? Such scenarios are beyond the realms of fantasy, yet such levels of warming could have a severe impact on winter and summer storms, sea-level rise and heat waves, for example.

This Global Conversation public lecture gives you the chance to hear from leading scientists in the field of Climate Change. Professor Richard Betts (Chair in Climate Impacts) and Professor Tim Lenton (Chair in Climate Change/Earth Systems Science) will present the latest science from the University and the Met Office that is exploring what a warmer world could be like, and what impact it could have on key issues such as food, water, energy security, flooding, health, migration and risk of conflict.

Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity to ask your questions directly to a panel of experts. The panel will feature Jason Lowe (Met Office), Kirsty Lewis (Met Office), Stephen Rumsey (Permian Global) and Professor Neil Adger (University of Exeter).

The event will be hosted by Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter who will provide an update from the University. You will also have the opportunity to network with academics, staff and guests during the cocktail reception.

This event forms part of the Global Conversation lecture series, an international series of events exploring global issues. You can share your thoughts and questions on the topic by following Twitter page @UoEGlobalConvo and view all our past and future events on the Global Conversation webpage.
