Event details
Background:
The English Riviera Global Geopark, situated in Torbay, South Devon, UK, joined Global Geopark Network in September 2007, and became, at that time, one of just 57 areas around the world to be endorsed by UNESCO and welcomed into the Global Geopark Network. What sets Global Geoparks apart from other designations is that they are locally-led partnerships and today, there are over 120 Global Geoparks, across 33 countries.
The purpose of a Global Geopark is to explore, develop and celebrate the links between the geological heritage and all other aspects of the area’s natural, cultural and intangible heritage. It is about reconnecting human society at all levels to the local area, to the wider environment and to celebrate how our planet and it’s 4,600 million year long history has shaped every aspect of our lives and our societies. Geoparks also promote awareness of key issues of climate change and geohazards facing society in the context of the dynamic planet we all share. Meanwhile, the Global Geopark model is a driver for education, community benefits, expansion of the tourism offer, and sympathetic regeneration.
The 7th International Conference on Global Geoparks will be hosted by the English Riviera in September 2016, anticipated to be attended by over 800 international delegates. The theme of the conference is Health and Wellbeing through Creative and Active Engagement.
Event aims:
The English Riviera Global Geopark is keen to further develop its relationship with the University of Exeter and any research opportunities across a range of disciplines. Additionally, the forthcoming conference provides an ideal opportunity to liaise with Global Geoparks from around the world and a platform on which to share relevant research and learn more about the Global Geopark agenda. Short term, the success of a recent funding bid presents a specific opportunity for an academic peice of work relating to a number of creative community projects that will take place over the coming months in the build up to the conference.
Who should attend?
This event is open to all academic (including PGR) and Professional Services staff (research managers, administrators, project officers, events managers, etc.) who are interested in engaging with the English Riviera Global Geopark.
