Symposium Information

Organised and led by the Institute of Cornish Studies (ICS), this half day symposium aims to establish a framework for future research on current issues relating to Cornwall.

Building on one of the Institute’s previous events: ‘Sustainable Cornwall – Exploring the Cultural Connection’, ICS is seeking to develop a research strategy relating to contemporary problems facing the region.  Through a series of short presentations, we aim to facilitate debate and discussion on devolution, the economy, environmental strategy and cultural identity.  Commonly identified as the three pillars: economic, environment and social; there are undoubted challenges in balancing these strands and encouraging solutions with linear thinking.   Discussions will focus on what needs to be done and how we can move forwards with research into these areas for Cornwall.

The afternoon’s proceedings will commence with a talk by John Pollard; leader of Cornwall Council.  Academics, policy makers and members of the public will be brought together in a constructive forum to explore and discuss issues relating to Cornwall’s present and future with respective speakers on the day.

A key outcome of the symposium is to work towards a ‘Contemporary Cornwall Research Unit’ based at the Institute that can investigate a broad range of socio-economic topics through the creation of specific research projects, postgraduate studentships and a related programme of talks and workshops.
