'Las sinsombrero' Documentary Screening and Q&A

If you enjoyed the film Suffragette do not miss the opportunity to watch Las sinsombrero and learn about the first generation of Spanish feminists, forgotten during Francoism and now gaining the recognition they deserve. Impact of this documentary has been substantial. On 14 October 2015 the Spanish parliament unanimously passed a resolution to change educational programmes in order to include women's contribution to arts and sciences in 20th-century Spain, specifically naming the project Las sinsombrero. Among others, the documentary has received the Dulce Chacon Award 2016 and the Luis Romero Solano Historical Memory Award 2016.

It will be followed by Q&A. Directors Tania Ballo and Serrana Torres have been invited to visit the University of Exeter. They will be here for a full working week in order to develop the script for Las sinsombrero II with Professor Nuria Capdevila-Argüelles, academic research advisor and script co-writer. She also appears in Las sinsombrero and her research methods and recent books feature in the monograph Tania Ballo has written about this documentary on the forgotten women of the Spanish avant-garde.  Already in its third edition, the book Las sinsombrero was presented in Madrid to a packed Palacio de la Prensa last February. The documentary was first screened in the UK in the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival.

Professor Nuria Capdevila-Argüelles will also be recording an interview with Jenny Murray for Women´s Hour on Friday 6th May. She will be talking about the unpublished works of feminist Elena Fortún (1885-1952), journalist, children´s author and novelist and one of the intellectuals appearing in Las sinsombrero II.
