*POSTPONED* Pathways from prevention to health outcomes: Transdisciplinary approaches to measuring what works

Health promotion and prevention interventions fall within two camps: community-placed and community-based. Recent reviews indicate that the community-placed interventions, which are designed by professionals for communities, may be less effective that community-based initiatives, where local people are actively engaged in designing and implementing programmes based on their own experience of what works. Evidence from community-based programmes, however, may not be as valued as academic research evidence when making commissioning decisions. Transdisciplinary approaches to evaluation have the potential to bring these two knowledge bases together because they are based on the principle that different bodies of knowledge need to be brought together in order to solve messy social problems.

Janet’s session will describe the process of transdisciplinary research that is being used to evaluate the integration of health and social care in Sheffield. The case study is based on the experiences of Janet’s NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowship. This is a three year project that aims to co-create an evidence base for community support services that can be used to inform the commissioning of integrated health and social care programmes.

Janet is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health & Related Research in the University of Sheffield.  Prior to working in Sheffield, she worked with the Norwegian Centre for Evidence Based Practice and directed the MSc and DPhil in Evidence Based Health Care in Oxford. She has a longstanding interest in community-based participatory research.
