Engineering role model and mentor Ophelia Black

Celebrate International Women’s Day with the WiSTEMM Network

Celebrate International Women’s Day with the WiSTEMM Network. We’re thrilled to host Ophelia Johnson, biomedical engineer and avid supporter of women in STEMM and BAME scientists. Come along to hear from Ophelia how important it is to support women in STEMM, then join us for a (free!) buffet lunch at 2pm in Exchange Seminar Green.

Event details

New Orleans native Ophelia Johnson graduated with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama. As an undergraduate, Ophelia was a leader of the National Society of Black Engineers and Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honour society, through which she developed community outreach programs to teach children about STEM. Through these roles, she mentored young women in science and engineering and conducted outreach programs with children of all ages to increase STEM awareness.

Ophelia has completed a Masters of Engineering in Design and Commercialization degree at UAB. She is currently continuing her postgraduate studies in Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship at Imperial College London as a Marshall Scholar. In her current programme, Ophelia is designing a medical device to treat knee injuries and a commercialisation plan for this new technology.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, the WiSTEMM Network has invited Ophelia to speak on Penryn Campus. Come along to Chapel Lecture Theatre at 1pm, 10th March, to hear her speak, then join us in Exchange Seminar Green for scones, tea, and the chance to network with fellow scientists. All staff and students from all disciplines are welcome.
