CRPL Research Tea: Relating models of expertise to academics’ professional learning

Session lead: Dr Helen King (Associate Director of Academic Practice at UWE)

The Centre for Research in Professional Learning are holding regular discussion sessions, known as Research Teas, throughout the 2017/18 academic year. All are welcome to attend.

Event details

At each Research Tea a member of the team gives an informal presentation on a chosen topic and then the session opens up for discussion.

The theme for this session is Relating models of expertise to academics’ professional learning

The session will be lead by Dr Helen King (Associate Director of Academic Practice at UWE)

Dr Helen King has been an active practitioner, researcher and leader in academic development for over 20 years. Starting her career as manager of the UK-wide, HEFCE-funded “Staff Development in the Earth Sciences” project she then moved on to be Assistant Director of the HEA Subject Centre for Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences. She then had the opportunity to live in the USA for three years where she worked as an independent consultant for projects in the UK and Australia, as well as collaborating with US-based geoscience education colleagues. On her return to the UK she worked as Senior Adviser at the HEA before taking up the role of Head of Academic Staff Development at the University of Bath. In October 2016, she became Senior Higher Education Policy Adviser in the Learning & Teaching Policy team at HEFCE; however, an exciting opportunity arose across the road at UWE Bristol where she has been Associate Director of Academic Practice since January 2018. Helen’s research and development interests relate to disciplinary thinking, dissemination of educational innovation, linking teaching and research, and, in particular, the concept of expertise in teaching. She holds a Senior Fellowship of the Staff & Educational Development Association, a National Teaching Fellowship and has recently achieved Principal Fellow of the HEA.

We hope you will be able to join us in what we hope will be a fruitful and interesting discussion.
