Whatever happened to Greek tragedy?
Professor Matthew Wright, Department of Classics and Ancient History, Inaugural Lecture
Greek tragedy is one of the most popular and best known genres of ancient literature. But it is not as well known as we like to think, for today all that remains of tragedy is a mere thirty-two plays, a tiny fraction of what once existed. This lecture investigates what happened to all the other plays, and imagines a counterfactual scenario in which a completely different selection of tragedies happened to survive.
