LGBTQ Inclusivity in Higher Education

The intended learning outcomes of this workshop are:

• Reflect on previous experiences of inclusivity and note any questions or concerns that you would like to address in this session.
• Be familiar with the Ward-Gale model for LGBTQ inclusivity in Higher Education.
• Be able to confidently apply and adapt the Ward-Gale model for LGBTQ inclusivity in Higher Education to use in your practice.
• Reflect on previous teaching experience and self-assess using the Ward-Gale model – think about how you can use a transformative approach to engaging with the model in HE.

Further information and an outline agenda for the workshop is attached.  Although aimed primarily at academic staff, Professional Services staff in student-facing roles are most welcome to attend.

The workshop will take place on  Friday 14 September, 10.00-12.00 in South Cloisters 3.06 with a  videolink to F083 KSpa.  Places are limited (especially at the KSpa end) so please register here by Friday 07 September to book your place.

• Reflecting on past experiences
• Abusive and discriminatory language
• Avoidance of heteronormative and cis-normative language
• Critical engagement -> queer/trans inclusive language
• Signposting to LGBTQ organisations and events (local, national, and international)
• LGBTQ mentors, role models and allies in teaching and learning environments
• Gender and sexual diversity
• Pronouns
• Inclusion of LGBTQ identities within teaching practice (topics, themes, readings, people)
• Critical approaches to pedagogy, supporting social engagement and action / inclusive professional practice
• Group reflection, how are you going to use this in your teaching practice?
• Time for questions and discussion
