Digital Humanities Workshop: Women’s History Wikipedia Editathon

A Digital Humanities workshop
Date22 February 2019
Time12:30 to 13:30
PlaceDigital Humanities Laboratory

Join Exeter University’s Digital Humanities Lab and Special Collections, to grow the number of Wikipedia entries written by, and about prominent women, past and present. These can be from the Special Collections, the Cinema Museum, or a collection/individual that interests you. Please make sure to sign up below.

The University of Exeter is providing a space for our educators, staff and students to drop-in informally to share their knowledge and become confident editors, with the support of our trainers.

The aim of the editathon is to empower staff and students to write Wikipedia articles, whilst making our knowledge of related material held in our collections accessible. There will be an opportunity to make additions to existing Wikipedia articles and to create new articles.

We particularly encourage participants to write about women’s history to celebrate our Special Collections, the subject of a recent online resource created by volunteers at http://hypatia.exeter.ac.uk/exhibits.

Why engage with Wikipedia?

  • Wikipedia remains a key source of knowledge worldwide and is often used as a first point of reference by our students;
  • Women are particularly welcome as contributing to and writing about women on Wikipedia addresses gender inequality in Wikipedia content;
  • Creating new, well referenced articles around niche subject areas in Wikipedia provides the editor with credibility in their field.

The editathon takes place from 12:30-13:30 and support will be provided around the following:

  • How to get started with wikis and Wikipedia;
  • Creating a new article;
  • Notability criteria and the collaborative editing process;
  • Uploading content and adding references;
  • Collaborative editing, informal group discussion and networking.

Please bring a laptop as desktop and laptop computers will be limited.

If you don’t have one already, you may wish to create a Wikipedia account ahead of the event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CreateAccount

Please note that this event is open for bookings by University of Exeter staff, students and GW4 members. Numbers are limited to 15, please indicate that you will be participating by reserving a place. Tea and coffee will be available for participants throughout the event.
