South West Alumnae Group (female graduates) Speaker Event, Exeter

Blue Planet: The changing song of the sea.

Event details

The South West Alumnae Group will be welcoming as their guest speaker, Tim Gordon.

Tim is a marine biologist studying the impacts of climate change on the world’s oceans. He uses bioacoustics to do this: underwater animals make a lot of noise, because they use sound to communicate, navigate, defend territories, find food, and sense their environment. These sounds travel far and fast underwater, so by eavesdropping on ocean habitats with underwater microphones we can gain valuable insights about marine ecosystems.

Tim has recently been researching this idea in the Arctic Ocean, the Java Sea and the Great Barrier Reef. He will explain how his recent work has revealed change in the underwater world, what it means for the animals that live there, and how we can use these recent discoveries and technologies to monitor and protect marine ecosystems. Tim holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, and is currently working at the University of Exeter and the Australian Institute of Marine Science.

The event will be a brilliant opportunity to meet and network with fellow graduates at Exeter’s Streatham Campus.
