About the speaker:

Dr Deborah Goodwin is Head of the Communication and Applied Behavioural Science Department at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She is recognised as a renowned Subject Matter Expert on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution skills. She pioneered the study, analysis and training of negotiation for the military from 1994 onwards; at a time when no-one had made any significant contribution in this field globally. Her doctorate is in Negotiation. She also creates and runs unique training simulations for groups up to 100 strong, which allow delegates to experience complex and ambiguous real-world contexts, and to apply practical frameworks for professional decision-making, problem-solving and negotiating. She concentrates on running experiential and interactive seminar sessions exploring these core professional skills, as well as leadership skills and ethical decision-making in complex environments.

Deborah describes herself as a ‘practical academic’; applying tried and tested formal knowledge to practical needs and personal skillsets. She has worked with practitioners (both civilian and military) for a considerable length of time, and produces informative, lively and engaging sessions.

She is also a qualified hostage negotiator, and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2017 for her services to Armed Forces Staff Training.
