Title:  Thinking small - Biomedical applications of nanoparticles in cancer therapy and iron-related diseases

Greg Anderson is Head of the Chronic Disorders Program at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Australia, and has headed the Iron Metabolism Laboratory at the Institute since 1995. He has broad interests in basic and clinical aspects of iron homeostasis and that of related metals, as well as in the biology of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, and the biomedical applications of nanotechnology. He carried out his undergraduate studies at the University of Newcastle (NSW), before completing an MSc at McMaster University in Canada and a PhD at the University of Queensland. After postdoctoral work in yeast genetics at the National Institutes of Health in the US, Greg returned to Australia and took up a position at QIMR Berghofer in 1992. He is a Past President of the International Bioiron Society and serves on the Board of the International Biometals Society. Since 2010 he has been a Visiting Professor at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology in Beijing. Current major research interests include the biology of copper-dependent iron oxidases, mechanisms of iron intake in early postnatal life, the use of nanotechnology to improve the delivery of iron chelators, and the pathogenesis of (and improved therapies for) hepatic encephalopathy.
