£3 million PhD scholarship funding scheme launched

The University has today launched the Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarships Match Fund to bring the brightest and the best researchers to Exeter regardless of their financial circumstances.

Announced at a gala dinner in the City of London in celebration of the University’s Diamond Jubilee, the Match Fund will support talented UK and international PhD students to conduct world class research in their field with the direct support of Exeter friends and alumni.

Professor Sir Steve Smith
, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Exeter, said: "In a competitive, international economy we must continue to find innovative ways to invest in our teaching and in our research, so I am delighted to launch a £3 million match funding scheme to bring more of the brightest and the best research students to Exeter."

Donations to the initiative will be matched 2:1 with an investment from the University. Donors can pool with a fellow supporter to create a single studentship and choose where their support is directed within any of Exeter’s major research themes.

Alumnus Neil Harvey (Accountancy Studies 1985) is a founding donor of the Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarship Match Fund. He said: "I am proud to be involved in this great initiative to bring the best PhD researchers to Exeter. Supporting a PhD student from Africa where I am originally from, feels a fitting way to give back to Exeter in this special year for my University."

Dr Shaun Curtis, Director of Global Engagement and Development, said: "By investing in partnership with us through this innovative Match Fund, donors will be helping the best PhD students expand the boundaries of knowledge while strengthening Exeter’s international research reputation. This support really will make a difference to our students and the areas they are researching."
