Professor Karen Hudson-Edwards, University of Exeter

Exeter Professor named among Top 100 most inspiring women in mining

Professor Karen Hudson-Edwards has been named one of the world’s most inspiring women in mining.

Professor Hudson-Edwards, a leading expert in Sustainable Mining, has been chosen for inclusion in the 2022 ‘100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining’ publication.

Ther illustrious book, published biennially, highlights the wealth of female talent within the global mining industry.  The book celebrates 100 women from around the world who go “above & beyond” and contribute so much to the industry and, as a result, are role models for everyone.

The book is produced by Women in Mining (UK), a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and progressing the development of women in the mining and minerals sector.

Professor Hudson-Edwards is featured among an international cast of women working at board and corporate level in banking and advisory positions and in a range of operational roles at mining companies.

She said: “I’m humbled and honoured to be included in this group of amazing women.  I’m looking forward to promoting the activities and work of Women in Mining.”

Professor Hudson-Edwards was inspired to study geology by a professor who gave a brilliant talk at her school open day.  She now trains students to be leaders in sustainable and responsible mining, and is also conducting research on the remediation and reuse of mine wastes, circular economy in mining, and the potential environmental impacts of increased mining of critical raw materials.

Carole Cable, Chair of WIM UK, said: “For the world to transition to a low-carbon economy, we will need six times more mineral inputs in 2040 to achieve net-zero emissions globally by 2050.  The mining sector plays a vital role in the supply of these critical metals which will be needed to decarbonise and electrify as we move from fossil fuels to wind and solar power generation, battery and fuel cell-based electric vehicles, and hydrogen production”.

“At the heart of delivering this, are people but we will only be successful and sustainable as an industry if our workforce and our workplace are truly diverse, equitable and inclusive. Congratulations and thank you to the 2022 WIM100 global inspirational women!”
