Welcome to the University of Exeter. I am Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University. Firstly, can I say how delighted I am that you have chosen to study with us and congratulations on getting a place!
I am proud to say that the University of Exeter is one of the leading research-led universities in the UK and our students have worked very hard to earn a place on our courses, so well done.
We have over 17,000 students and 3,000 staff, which means that we are large enough to offer all the facilities you’d expect to find in a major university, but small enough to retain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I appreciate that there is a great deal for you to take in when you first arrive. That is why we have set aside this first week entirely for new first-year students. I hope that you find this time useful for settling in, getting your bearings, and getting to know new people. Our campuses in Exeter and Cornwall are truly wonderful places to live and study, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. Our campus in Exeter is set in picturesque gardens and is a short walk from the historic city centre. Our campus in Cornwall, near Falmouth, offers excellent facilities in an environment unrivalled in the UK, offering a friendly atmosphere, innovative programmes and a great student experience.
You have joined a successful and expanding university. In Exeter, you will see that work is near to completion on delivering the University’s £275 million ambitious capital programme. This will see the creation of new state-of-the-art facilities for our students, including a £48 million redevelopment of the heart of the Exeter campus called the Forum Project. In Cornwall, we are creating a new £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute which will bring a further expansion of the campus and generating world-class research into the causes of environmental change and how to manage its effects.
On behalf of all my colleagues I hope that you will have a truly wonderful time here. We look forward to supporting you to achieve the highest academic standards in your chosen course, and your hopes and aspirations for the future.
