Self-funded research project opportunities
The global challenges of the 21st century require research which spans traditional subject boundaries.
Nearly all our research is rated of international quality* and we are the fastest growing research university in the UK**.
We are helping to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come and have a direct impact on changing attitudes, government policy and everyone’s understanding of the world.
Exceptional research requires outstanding people. We’re looking for the next generation of PhD researchers to join our international research community, to help answer the questions of tomorrow, today.
Please click on the broad subject groupings below to find out if we have specific MbyRes and PhD projects available in your area of interest now.
To view all the PhDs we offer at the University of Exeter, please see our research topics and degrees page.
The projects available in the following pages are self-funded, therefore applicants will need to pay their own fees and living costs or have access to suitable third party funding such as a Doctoral loan or other sponsor. In addition to the University’s standard tuitions fees, bench fees (research costs) may also be applied, details of which will be shown if appropriate to the project.
*98 per cent of our research is 2*,3* and 4* based on the latest Research Assessment Exercise 2014
** based on research income between 07/08 to 16/17 (187% growth over period, £24.5m to £70.2m). Excludes R&D tax credits income.
