Cornish Language Strategy

Key findings

  • Construct a development plan that focuses on the need for long-term, consistent funding to enable Cornish language organisations and partners to plan and invest in development of use of the language.
  • Include a strategic aim to support the development and co-ordination of resources for Cornish language teachers across all areas of provision.
  • More consistent communication of news, updates and progress relating to the Cornish language and the Cornish Language Strategy.

Summary

Our evaluation found that significant progress has been made in the promotion and visibility of the Cornish language since 2015, which is a testament to the hard work of the many volunteers and those at the Cornish Language Office. Notable positives included a programme of Cornish language learning at primary school level, increased visibility through film and television, and the support of new creative work featuring the Cornish language. We also found that there were areas where further progress could be made and new strands of work could be considered. In particular, training and support for Cornish language teachers was seen to be important, alongside identifying near market learners and working with partners to expose them to the Cornish language, and developing wider opportunities to engage with Cornish language beyond the traditional delivery in-class model.
