People with dementia

We work closely with people with dementia to understand the experience of living with dementia.

Our work focuses on identifying what can help to maintain or improve well-being and quality of life and enable people to live active and fulfilling lives.

We focus on developing and testing new interventions to enable people with dementia to function at the best possible level and experience the best possible level of wellbeing.

Examples of our work in this area include understanding how people understand and adjust to a diagnosis of dementia, awareness of changes and difficulties, the impact of dementia on sense of self and identity, and specific needs of people with rare dementia. We co-produce measures for use in research. We also produce interventions, including cognitive rehabilitation to support everyday functioning, and specific approaches for people with semantic dementia, as well as self-management groups. We involve people with dementia and carers in our research and in co-production of resources and knowledge. To achieve this, we work in partnership with organisations representing people with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Society and Innovations in Dementia.
