Overview:
My research has focused principally on the (patho)physiology of the pancreatic beta-cell in diabetes. My research team are custodians of a unique and extensive biobank of pancreas samples collected from children and young people who died soon after the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Using these samples, the team has made important contributions to the understanding of immune-mediated attack in type 1 diabetes and to the role of enteroviruses as potential mediators of beta-cell loss. This information will inform the design of therapies to halt the progression of type 1 diabetes using a precision diabetes approach, in future.
