Exploring the histories of Kennford, Kenn and Kenton: a public event
Thursday 6 June, 4-7pm, at The Kenn Centre, Exeter Road, Kennford, Exeter EX6 7UE
Research in the archives at Powderham Castle and other regional collections has led historians at the University of Exeter to discover many new insights into the long history of Kennford, Kenn and Kenton. Join our researchers James Clark and Henry French on 6 June to find out more.
We’ll be sharing:
- Reproductions of some of the earliest maps of the three villages, revealing their origins and subsequent development
- Examples from the medieval cartulary of the Courtenays – a 650-year-old book that traces the beginnings of Kennford as a settlement
- Early documents from Kenton’s history
- Satellite maps of the villages, each showing the different phases of historical development, as well as LIDAR images showing earthworks and other hidden archaeological features in incredible detail
At 6pm, Profs. Clark and French will give a short talk explaining the nature of the research, as well as discussing what sources there are in the region that help to uncover the history of the villages, and how applying this knowledge can have an impact on contemporary issues, such as the designation of new heritage sites, the creation of Conservation Areas and decisions around Planning Permission.
There’ll also be time before and after the talk to ask questions, find out more about the research, and to share your own stories about the history of Kennford, Kenn and Kenton.
