Microbes
This research area investigates microbes - tiny living systems that are too small to observe with the naked eye but play a key role in health and disease. Scientists in this research area aim to determine the mechanisms controlling the functioning of bacteria, viruses, and phage (i.e. viruses that infect bacteria) and their interactions with their hosts, including humans, animals and plants.
This area integrates cutting-edge technologies such as cryo-electron microscopy, transcriptomics, genome editing and microfluidics-based single-cell analysis to obtain new fundamental knowledge that will be relevant for drug development, food security and biotechnology.
