Living Systems Institute a double winner at 2017 Michelmores Property Awards

The University of Exeter’s flagship Living Systems Institute (LSI) secured two accolades at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The LSI, a £52 million world-class, next generation collaborative research community based at Exeter’s Streatham Campus, was the big winner at the 2017 Michelmores Property Awards.

As well as winning the most prestigious award of the night, the 2017 Building of the Year, the LSI also scooped the Education Project of the Year Award.

Phil Attwell, Director of Campus Services said: “We are delighted at the success of the Living Systems building in this year’s property awards. We have continued to invest in our infrastructure and the LSI adds to our portfolio of buildings which enable world-class research to take place on our campuses.”

The LSI is designed to develop a completely new approach to the analysis of Biological processes. It takes a holistic view of how cells, tissues and whole organisms operate and, importantly, what happens to them when they succumb to diseases.

The LSI is a truly inter-disciplinary endeavour that will involve scientists involved in clinical research with engineers, physicists, mathematicians, cell biologists, molecular geneticists and a whole string of other disciplines who will pool their expertise to address the same underlying research questions.

This institute took nearly two years to construct and involved a huge team of specialists including, Mace (Project Managers), Hawkins Brown (Architects), Aecom (Structural Engineers), and Hoare Lea (Building Services).

Representatives from BAM Construction and University of Exeter attended the award ceremony, which was also hosted at the University, and which attracted more than 600 guests.

BAM Construction Director, Graham Kingdon, said “It was a fantastic team effort and these Awards are recognition for a tremendous achievement.”
