Optoplasmonic single-molecule sensing of enzyme dynamics

Conference brings together GW4 researchers to explore new directions and networks related to Physics of Life

The Living Systems Institute will host a one day conference and workshop on Monday 11th January 2021, bringing together GW4 researchers working in the field of biosensing and protein structures to establish a research community around emerging tools, and cutting edge research questions, in Sensing and modelling dynamic protein structures.

The aim of the conference is to:
· establish a research community around emerging tools and cutting-edge research questions in the area of Sensing and modelling dynamic protein structures,
· identify research directions that could be explored within GW4 and through collaborations,
· form lasting networks of researchers that can connect to Physics of Life,
· reinvigorate the GW4 bio-sensor network and website.

The conference and workshop features speakers from across the GW4 Alliance who are working in biosensing and protein structures, and from leading institutes in this field in the UK, and beyond. Speakers will describe their current work and how they are supported by a range of existing networks.

Through discussion with the panel and participants the event aims to identify research directions that could be explored within GW4, and through collaborations, to form lasting networks of researchers that can connect to Physics of Life. Reinvigorating and extending the GW4 bio-sensor network will be discussed. Further possibilities for collaboration in nano and quantum biosensing both within GW4 and more widely will be explored.

This conference and workshop is an activity from the Molecular Mechanics of Enzymes project, funded by the UKRI Strategic Priorities Fund and led by Co-PIs Frank Vollmer and Jennifer Littlechild. The project is developing a novel nanosensing technique that can measure femto-Newton forces of single molecules for the first time. It is a truly interdisciplinary project involving researchers from Physics, Biosciences and Mathematics, as well as the Living Systems Institute itself, and the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology.

The Molecular Mechanics Initiative is a cutting-edge research programme undertaken by Professor Frank Vollmer and his team, aiming to make a step change in how we detect, analyse and manipulate molecules at the ultimate single-molecule level.
