An integrated scientific community focussed on knowledge and command of cells
The LSI is a flagship for research excellence in the University of Exeter, driven by scientific curiosity that transcends discipline boundaries. Our shared goal is to decode the complexity of living systems across scales, from sub-molecular to cell populations, and from microbes to humans.
LSI is home to biologists, biomedical scientists, engineers, physicists and mathematicians. This melting pot is a catalyst for new ideas to discover knowledge and innovations to transform healthcare.
We address challenges in molecular & cellular biology, stem cells & development, and neuroscience.
Merging disciplines powers four cross-cutting themes:
Elucidating and exploiting the modalities by which biological systems sense and respond to their environment
Combining biology, physics and mathematics to reveal the organisation and dynamics of living systems
Deconstructing and reconstructing biological phenomena from molecular and cellular component parts
Developing and analysing mathematical models to explain and predict function and dysfunction in biological systems
