Event gets hands on with the latest VR tech for business

On Tuesday 14 March, the Innovation Centre hosted a virtual reality event jointly organised by the University of Exeter’s MBA course and Tech Exeter.

The Virtual/Augmented Reality Event was developed as part of the MBA programme’s module "Leading in the 4th Industrial Revolution" where students are challenged to consider the impact of technology in future business models.

The unique collaboration with Tech Exeter brought together a range of pioneering technologies and communities. Participants included Innovation Centre and Science Park Centre clients, Exeter student and business mentors alongside the MBA cohort and TechExeter members. These communities were able to experience the capabilities of such forward-thinking technologies and discuss the opportunities.

Several cutting edge virtual and augmented reality experts showcased at the event including:  Plymouth based, Nikomus Games who demonstrated their new VR game on Google Cardboard, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with Leap Motion. In addition, the research team at EDF brought along a Microsoft HoloLens. Such opportunities enabled participants to paint with light and stack blocks of air amongst other incredible activities.

Adam Lusby, Circular economy advisor and lecturer on the University of Exeter's One Planet MBA spoke about the event enthusiastically: "It was a fantastic event and we were very lucky to be supported by so many great people. This technology has the potential to disrupt many aspects of business and add significant value to a wide range of sectors. I believe it really is a case of having to see it to believe it."

Rob J Glover, co-founder of Tech Exeter CIC remarked on the event:"Thanks to our fantastic community we were able to bring the latest VR & AR Tech to the University. One of Tech Exeter’s aims is to encourage greater collaboration within Exeter and this event has been a brilliant example of Education, Business and Community working together. We look forward to more of this in the future."
