Professor Krasimira Tsaneva-Atanasova

Exeter Professor selected for EPSRC’s Strategic Advisory Network

One of the University of Exeter’s foremost experts in using Mathematics in Biomedicine and Healthcare has been selected to join a prestigious national advisory group. 

Professor Krasimira Tsaneva-Atanasova is one of 16 new members to be appointed to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Strategic Advisory Network (SAN), announced today. 

The SAN provides the EPSRC Executive with strategic advice to assist in developing, implementing and modifying plans, and to make appropriate recommendations to EPSRC’s Council. 

The network is a flexible resource, enabling the EPSRC Executive to obtain the advice it needs in a timely manner. It draws on a range of perspectives from across key stakeholder groups including academia. 

Professor Tsaneva-Atanasova will join current SAN members and will take up her appointment from April 1st,2021.  

Speaking of her appointment, Professor Tsaneva-Atanasova said: “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as a member of the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Network (SAN). I genuinely believe that engaging with EPSRC at this level and having a voice in providing credible advice and strategic steer into EPSRC policy development is worth investing time and energy.  

“I am convinced that networking with other SAN members would be enriching, illuminating and thus very informative for the growth of my own research portfolio.” 

Krasimira Tsaneva-Atanasova is Professor of Mathematics for Healthcare in the Living Systems Institute and the Department of Mathematics, College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Exeter.  She also serves as Associate Dean for Global in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. 

Her research and professional activities aim to inform novel applications of mathematics to enable the development of quantitative methods for healthcare and healthcare technologies. In her research, she develops and analyses mathematical models for applications to personalised prediction and clinical decision support in prevention, diagnosis or treatment of health-related conditions.  

Professor Tsaneva-Atanasova is also the Director of the EPSRC Hub for Quantitative Modelling in Healthcare , Co-director of the University of Exeter ISSF TREE (a £4.8M initiative between UoE and the Wellcome Trust) and an Alan Turing Institute Fellow since October 2018. 

She is also a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow  at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), an Associate member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, section Bioinformatics and Mathematical Modelling and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
