About this programme:

This programme is designed to help team-leaders and supervisors identify the key differences between working within a team, and assisting in the supervision of a team, and to provide them with practical tools to support them.

Delegates will attend participative workshops that use facilitated discussion, presentations, case studies and group work. The workshops promote reflective review, and encourage delegates to find opportunities to apply the learning in the workplace.

Learning outcomes: As a result of attending this programme, you will:
  • Acquire core leadership and management skills
  • Know how to apply these skills in the workplace
  • Be equipped to improve your own and your team’s performance
  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification

The programme consists of 2 modules:

  1. Developing Yourself as a Team Leader (2 X 3-hour online workshops). This provides a really good overview of what a leader does and helps to provide a framework to understand what is involved in leading a team in terms of role, decision making and responsibility. This unit looks at the skills, knowledge and behaviours of a leader including the ability to understand, use and manage your emotions in positive ways.
  2. Organising and Delivering Team Workload (2 X 3-hour online workshops). This unit will look at the practical ‘task’ aspects as well as the ‘people’ aspects of task delivery. We will provide some really helpful tools for planning and distributing workload fairly and effectively. These techniques can be used by you and your team members to plan and monitor progress.

Who should attend this programme:
  • This programme is open to all staff groups.
  • Delegates may be new in role or more experienced and wishing to gain formal management qualifications and/or develop/re-assess skills and knowledge.
  • This programme has been specially designed for practising supervisors/managers. As the course is assessed through work-based assignments, you must already be in a management/ supervisory post with responsibility for managing/leading other staff rather than aspiring to this role.
  • This course is designed to help you boost your performance as a team leader and help you make the transition from working in a team to leading a team. As a practising team leader, it will help you be more effective and confident in your role.
Cost and Time Commitment:

£84 to cover ILM registration fee (you will be asked to provide a departmental cost code for this fee). Training costs will be funded by People Development.
This is a comprehensive programme leading to a qualification, delegates should be aware that they are required to attend all sessions and complete all the assessments. As a guide this will involve:

  • A programme induction
  • 4 X 3 hour online workshops delivered via video call, making full use of break out rooms so that learning is still engaging and enabling participants to discuss tools and techniques and work through case studies.  
  • 2 assignments, each requiring approximately 10 hours to read, research, prepare and write/present
  • Reflection and action planning back in the workplace – individually and with your line manager
Assessment: Delegates complete work-based learning assignments, which are internally assessed and verified by the ILM in order to achieve their accreditation.
