Clive Betts

Head of People Development

I lead and manage a team of nine staff who support and deliver all of our services. I am responsible for a broad portfolio of courses, one-to-one support, mandatory training, online resources plus other services and am accountable to Senior Management for the effective planning and delivery of this portfolio. I also work with senior colleagues to plan our strategic approach to learning and development for all staff roles, contributing to key initiatives such as “Exeter Academic” and "Positive Working Environment".

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have a background in science research and education along with two decades of experience in vocational qualifications (VQs), information technology and management development. I am an accredited VQ Assessor, Verifier, Mentor, Tutor and ESCI 360 reviewer and hold qualifications in operational management and event facilitation.

Rachel Brewer

Learning & Development Manager (Leadership & Management Development)

I am responsible for the development and delivery of the leadership and management development portfolio for professional staff and the key contact for Colleges/Services with queries in this area. This portfolio includes programmes leading to Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) qualifications, as well as a range of shorter management workshops: 'Management Know-How'; 'Exeter Entrepreneur' and programmes without qualifications.

I can support you with bespoke development activities and training delivery. 

I provide a brokerage service for staff interested in accessing external coaches on our register.

I support the development and delivery of the Exeter Academic Programme, tying together a wealth of Academic development opportunities across education, research and leadership development. As a key contact for Educators, Programmes, Disciplines and Colleges within this area, I work across People Development, Academic Development and Research Development to provide tailored support to help Academics achieve personal and professional goals and ambitions.

I am a Fellow of the HEA and have many years’ experience within Higher Education, supporting the development of teaching and learning.

Jonathan Cresswell

Learning, Development and Apprenticeship Manager

Working as part of a team of learning and development professionals, I deliver and grow the range of services available to all employees. I am developing professions frameworks to ensure that all professional services employees have access to the most up to date programmes to support them within their current role and can clearly identify future development opportunities. I also develop, implement and provide advice on Professional Development apprenticeship programmes for new and existing staff to ensure that the University maximises the benefit of the Apprenticeship Levy to support the aims of our “Attract, Perform, Retain” People Strategy.

Areas of expertise: Development frameworks for Professional Services, Apprenticeships for current and new staff, professional registration, consultancy relating to the entire People Development Portfolio.

Rebecca Ledger

Learning & Development Manager (Personal Effectiveness)

I manage and coordinate the Personal Effectiveness Portfolio, as well as delivering training to staff. The Personal Effectiveness portfolio contains a suite of learning and development opportunities that are available to all staff.  The portfolio aligns staff development with the strategic aims of the University and supports the Positive Working Environment initiatives, as well as identifying immerging development needs.  The development opportunities are categorised within the following areas: Working within a Team, Professional Knowledge and Business Skills, Developing Yourself and Your Career.  Also within my remit is the coordination of courses delivered by internal University departments such as Health and Safety, Finance, Information Technology, Equality and Diversity, Wellbeing, Environment and more. I also oversee the policy for and coordinate Mandatory Training and Induction and linked with this, the University’s e-learning system LearnUpon.  Working with and helping to develop teams within the University is another key strand of my work.

Kathryn Coombes

I am the Team Leader for the People Development administration team.  I have oversight of the work of the administrative team and am responsible for learning and development data, budget monitoring, support for Learning & Development Managers, bespoke events and contracts for external suppliers.  I am a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development.

Amelia Ware

Amelia joined the People Development Team in October 2017 and is responsible for the administration our open programme of courses as well as providing general administrative support.  Amelia has successfully completed her Level 2 and is continuing with her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship.
