EDI Vision 2019-2025

We have been on a journey of reflection on our culture and how we take our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion further. This has been informed by our key initiatives, including the Provost Commission, our Speak Out GuardiansValuesWidening Participation plans and feedback from our staff and student community.

We know we can be sector-leading. Following the hard work invested during the period of our last strategy, we have built a foundation of recognised good practice and this is reflected in our institutional Athena SWAN Silver Award and new sector-leading policies on parental leave. We want to build on this foundation.

Our new vision for EDI will take us on the next step in this journey and guide our development over the next five years. Vision 2025 will ensure the University of Exeter not only achieves compliance with its legal duties under the Equality Act 2010 and other institution-wide commitments but also supports a positive inclusive culture and national best practice. The Vision was agreed by University Council in the Summer of 2019.

Everyone Welcome, Many Voices, One Community

The Vision supports the goals as set out in our Sovereign Strategies; Education, Research and Impact and Global to 2025.

The Vision 2025 serves a number of functions:

  1. A route of progression from compliance through to cultural change then ending in cultural competency (the destination)
  2. Demonstrates a need to return to the basics and fundamentals and build on these to ensure cultural competence
  3. Indicates progress already made and work still to be explored
  4. Covers a whole-institution approach to EDI and the EDI Governance Structure to enable the same.

Development of Vision 2025 undertook a robust consultation process, engaging a diverse range of students, staff and local partners and was shared with the University's governing body, University Council. Council were encouraged by the Vision’s progressive aims and implementation strategy and it was approved at the July 2019 meeting.
