Gill Winsor

Gill is the Retail Manager for the Marketplace shop based in the Forum and is a fantastic example of someone who can achieve anything if they put their mind to it.

Her hard work and dedication has seen her develop her career from being a part time retail assistant to a confident manager of 15, who was integral to the planning, development and implementation of the Marketplace. Following her return to work after raising a family, Gill invested her own time to develop her skills by undertaking the Aspirational Managers Programme and ILM qualification at the same time. Obviously this was no easy task but as Gill explains: “I knew I just had to put my mind to it and invest the time if I was going to succeed and develop my career. I thoroughly enjoyed the courses, it provided me with the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and gave me the confidence I needed in the workplace.”

Gill has also been pivotal in inspiring her team to support numerous fundraising activities for the local community and this year plans to walk across the Sahara desert in aid of Hospiscare, Campus Services chosen charity. She says: “Don’t ask me what inspired me to undertake the Sahara Trek, I’m no real walker but after seeing the opportunity I just knew I had to grasp it with both hands. A colleague of mine, who was cared for by Hospiscare, sadly passed away in April 2012 and so I will be walking in her memory and hope to raise as much money as possible.”

As a young child Gill was inspired by her own mother, she says: “My mother is such an inspiration. From a humble difficult upbringing in a small hamlet in the Lancashire countryside my mum left school at the age of 14 without any qualifications and was due for a life “in service”. However, with the support of my Nan she took herself to Liverpool to train as a nurse where she succeeded in becoming a Matron. She put her career on hold whilst she raised me and my siblings, before returning to nursing as a district night nurse and being promoted to District Night Nursing Manager. Even after retirement she still actively continues to help the community.”

Gill explains that what brings her the most joy in life is being successful in her career, watching her family grow and achieve their own goals and spending time with her grandson Charlie.
