Professor Meiling Zhu

Professor Meiling Zhu holds the Chair of Mechanical Engineering and leads the research theme in design, modelling and implementation of energy harvesting powered wireless sensing and communication systems within the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. It is a position that she takes a great deal of responsibility for, and pride in, and hopes that it provides inspiration to the next generation of scientists.

Meiling said: “I am very proud of my current academic position, as both professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering at Exeter. It is perhaps not traditionally a role that many women have held before, but I am driven by achieving excellence in all that I do, and want to be the best I can possibly be, for myself but also for my students.

When considering the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, which is inspiring change, Meiling said that it should encourage people to always believe the can reach their full potential. She said: “My advice to others is always ‘nothing is impossible’. Of course we should not forget that to inspire change we need to be positive, we need to be committed, and also find room for some self-reflection as we try to achieve whatever it is we desire. But by keeping these in our minds, we can inspire change to bring a better life, a better career and a better contribution to our professional life that will benefit ourselves, and those around us.”

It is this dedication to her own personal career development, as well as surpassing her responsibilities as Chair of Mechanical Engineering, that Meiling says brings her the most joy in life. She added; “My work and my achievements bring me joy. Being able to achieve all that I set out to do is something that gives me inspiration and encourages me to do the best I possibly can each and every day.”
