This policy sets out the University’s rules and strict instructions for the use of alcohol in the work place.

Students working, researching and studying at the University are expected to adhere to the expectations set in out in Alcohol and the Workplace, particularly in areas designated as “exclusion zones”, to ensure that a safe working and learning environment is maintained for all members of the University community.  The “General regulations for Students” clauses 5.1 and 5.2 regarding conduct apply and sections 7 and 8 of the Student Disciplinary procedure give examples of offences relating to anti-social behaviour which may br referred for investigation.

Academic visitors and employees of other organisations who work alongside University employees are expected to adhere to the policy guidelines.

Employees and students who live on campus have the same freedoms in their leisure time as any others and accordingly the policy does not apply any special responsibilities or sanctions to employees who are residents of University accommodation.

Conference delegates and members of the public using University facilities are not within the scope of this policy.

While this policy refers specifically to the use of alcohol, its expectations extend to other substances – including prescription drugs, solvents, and substances covered by the Misuse of Drugs Act – which may have a detrimental effect on safety, conduct and performance at work and study.
