The University recognises that it has a duty of care towards its employees and views drug abuse and alcohol dependency as a medical problems rather than disciplinary matters. However, there may be occasions when disciplinary measures will need to be taken and this documents seeks to define these in broad terms. This document also aims:

  1. to facilitate early recognition of, and if necessary supportive treatment for, any employees suspected of having a substance abuse problem (including a dependency on alcohol)
  2. to describe the procedures to be followed when dealing with n employee who is suspected to be suffering from substance abuse or alcohol dependency
  3. to provide guidance for dealing with employees who are suffering from long-term substance abuse or alcohol dependency
  4. to inform employees about the consequences of being caught using or supplying controlled drugs or partaking in alcohol consumption in a designated exclusion zone (see Alcohol at Work and Study Policy)
