Scholarship Recipients 2019
Exeter Scholars is supported by a number of generous individuals who have made donations and scholarships available to programme participants who succeed in becoming Exeter Senior Scholars and choose to study at the University of Exeter.

The Laura Piper Award
Ric and Dianne Piper, the parents of Laura who studied Law at Exeter, established this award as a long lasting memory of Laura for her family and friends. She was extremely proud to have studied Law at Exeter.

Amount: £3000 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: The highest achieving Senior Scholar who has completed the Pathways to Law subject activity strand, hosted by the University of Exeter, and has accepted an offer to study with the Law School
Recipient: Molly
Molly completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying LLB Law.
'Studying law became an ambition of mine during A Levels, the way that society operates, the laws that govern it and the ethics that surround them fuelled my motivation to become a barrister. [...] Through the help of the scholarship, I will be able to partake in a variety of volunteer schemes such as the prison project and support my studies which will alleviate any worries I have regarding finances. With large expenses for textbooks this financial help from the scholarship will allow me to save my money and invest in all the materials I need to have in order to achieve the best grades I can. The impact the scholarship will have on my studies is primarily the motivation it will give me to pursue my ambition to practice law and be able to do so with financial support.'
The Anthony Vale Scholarship
Donor: University of Exeter alumnus Anthony Vale (LLB Law 1972)
Amount: £3000 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: A high achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study with the Law School. Students who have become a Senior Scholar as a result of the national Realising Opportunities or Pathways to Law programmes (non-Exeter hosted) will not be eligible for this Scholarship
Recipient: Toby
Toby completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying LLB Law.
'Growing up in a rural area, with a low-household income and a single-working mother, the financial award will help me greatly with being able to travel to and attend extra-circular events in order to help advance my future career, such as work experience at larger firms. In addition, the award will assist me in being able to focus more on my studies without having to work as much to afford university life. As I have grown up with anxiety, this award will not just have a positive impact on my studies, but also my mental health. I would personally like to thank the Pathways to Law programme with the University of Exeter for the opportunity as well as the various donors for the Exeter Scholars Attainment Award.'
The Tony Allen Scholarship
Donor: University of Exeter alumnus Tony Allen (BSc Physics 1965)
Amount: Three awards of £1500 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: The three highest achieving Senior Scholars who are living in either the South Hams, Teignbridge, or Torbay areas of Devon
Recipients: Jack, Georgie, and Kelsey
Jack completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying MPhys Physics.
'With the bursary money I will be able to afford books for my course, as well as a laptop, which will help me a great deal with my course work. Without the money, I would be unable to even think about getting books for further reading so I wouldn’t be able to explore the various areas of Physics that interest me and are relevant to the course. The money will also be useful in relieving the stress of being able to afford commodities such as food and this will enable me to concentrate more on my studies in Physics. I would like to thank you very much for your kind gift as it means a great deal to me, [...] your gift will make all the difference in the World to me.'
Georgie completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BSc Psychology with Study Abroad.
'Whilst I don’t think that money should be central to enjoying life, I really believe this prize will enable me to get even more out of my university life. I’m currently undecided about how to spend it, but I think it would be a good idea to save some of it for my study abroad year – to ensure I can explore as well as learn, which I think is very important, wherever I am in the world! Completing Exeter Scholars, becoming a Senior Scholar and receiving this prize has provided me with a new-found sense of motivation and belief in myself, in the way that I now believe I am truly capable of anything if I work or want it hard enough and that I will be rewarded for it in some way. I will take this as motivation to put my all into my degree, to receive the prize of living a happy life in a career that I love. I would like to say thank-you so much to the prize donor and to those who organised the program for the opportunity to receive such a prize! I thoroughly enjoyed my Exeter Scholars experience and look forward to my experiences as an actual University of Exeter student.'
Kelsey completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying LLB Law.
'The Exeter Scholars programme really helped me understand what lectures and seminars are like, which made it easier for me to settle back into education. From taking part in the Exeter Scholars programme, I have learned key networking skills which have helped me with my Law degree. I have also made friends that I am still in contact with over a year after finishing the programme.'
The Pierce Scholarship

Amount: £5000 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: A high achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study with the University of Exeter Business School. Students who have become a Senior Scholar as a result of the national Realising Opportunities or Pathways to Law programmes (non-Exeter hosted) will not be eligible for this Scholarship
Recipient: Jessica
Jessica completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BSc Business Economics with Industrial Experience.
'I am very grateful to receive this scholarship which will help me significantly at university and will relieve some of the financial stress. It will reduce the need for me to have to work and will enable me to concentrate more on my studies and get the most out of my university experience such as joining both academic and sport societies. Having more time to spend on my studies will mean I can explore areas of particular interest in more depth and purchase additional reading materials. The course that I am studying is Business Economics and I’ve just started in my first year, I’m specifically interested in management studies and hope to pursue a career in that field. This award will help to support me over the holiday periods during which I’d like to complete more work experience to help me in my future career.'
The Cassland Scholarship
Alumna Imogen Joss (BA Arabic and Islamic Studies 1985) has established this award on behalf of her family. She said: "I was fortunate enough to study at Exeter and all three of my children have also been educated at the University. For all of us the time spent at Exeter as well as our time abroad in the pursuit of our studies has given us life experiences that have formed us in both our personal lives and our careers. As a family we are delighted to be able to offer the possibility of such experiences to another student and to maintain our links with a place that we hold in high regard and deep affection."

Recipient: Julia
Julia completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BA Management and Marketing with Industrial Work Experience.
'Being able to take part in the Exeter Scholars programme alongside my A Levels was a great door-opening opportunity, helping me develop both academically and personally. Having taken the programme has led me to receiving this award, which I recommend to all. The outstanding financial support which I have received from my donor Imogen has taken a lot of pressure off me; with the grant covering my tuition fees and any further academic resources means that I do not have to stress about having to find a part-time job to cover excess living costs. The money is a great motivational factor for myself, pushing me to study harder as well as making the most out of my social life by joining societies and taking part in events. I would like to thank the University and Imogen once again for awarding me with the scholarship and the great benefits it holds.'
The Exeter Scholars Academic Excellence Award

Awarding Criteria: The highest achieving Senior Scholar overall, including national Pathways to Law and Realising Opportunities participants

Jeremiah completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying MSci Applied Psychology (Clinical).
'Due to the amazing opportunity of the Exeter Scholars programme and the reward prize offered, firstly motivated me to achieve the highest grade on my course at college and give relief in terms of having enough funding to pay for academic resources as well as trips and events that occur at the university. Whereas on top of paying rent I would have struggled to do so. I now have more free time working fewer days to afford this, meaning I get more out of University by joining Societies and more time to study. I give my upmost gratitude and honour to the scholarship team for their time and effort as well as the prize donor for making this all possible.'
The Daniel Masters Scholarship
Alumnus Daniel Masters (BSc Physics with Geophysics 1984), Chairman of CoinShares has established this award in recognition of his time at Exeter. He said: “My experience at Exeter inspired me to engage in lifelong learning, and led me into the study of blockchain and distributed ledgers. I believe young people should gain a thorough understanding of this vital technology – the internet of transactions. I am therefore supporting subjects which will provide a grounding in aspects of this new science. In recognition of my time at Exeter, I have made a bequest in my will to leave a legacy as a permanent endowment.”
Donor: University of Exeter alumnus Daniel Masters (BSc Physics with Geophysics 1984)
Amount: £3750 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: The highest achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study a course which includes one of the following subjects: Computer Science and IT, Data Science, Mathematics, or Physics
Recipient: Jake
Jake completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BSc Mathematics.
'My main academic interest is problem solving, particularly in the area of applied mathematics. During my A Levels, I very much enjoyed all of Physics, as well engineering (although I only had the chance to do one module on this). [...] My future ambitions vary at this stage, between becoming an automotive engineer, an actuary or data analyst, or even undertaking further study with the goal of becoming an investment banker. I’m hoping my time studying at Exeter, will help me to decide, which will best suit me. I will put this award money towards: my travel to university, as I have stayed at home to save money; purchasing my subject books; and joining societies like American Football and the Maths Society. The award will motivate me in my studies because it shows me what I can achieve, by putting in the work. I would just like to finish by thanking the prize-donor for this great opportunity.'
The Vicky Naylor Scholarship
Donor: University of Exeter alumna Vicky Naylor (BA Russian 1993)
Amount: £3000 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: The highest achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study Russian. In the event of no Senior Scholars holding an offer to study Russian, the scholarship will be awarded to the highest achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study any programme within Modern Languages
Recipient: Catrin
Catrin completed the Exeter Scholars National pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BA Modern Languages.
'With the money that I receive from the award, I am intending on learning Russian in the Foreign Languages Centre. This money will allow me to begin learning another language in the evenings and will take off any financial pressure. I am also intending to use the money towards any books that may be required as part of my course. Having received this prize, I believe that it will motivate me to continue working hard and to continue upholding high standards as a thank you to the university for their support.'
The Meadowsweet Scholarships

Recipient: Jonathan
Jonathan completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BSc Mathematics.
'I’ve always loved Maths, particularly Pure Maths. I’m also interested in evolution, ecology and biology. As a young child I was fascinated by dinosaurs and evolution. Perhaps after my degree I will extend my studies and combine Mathematics with biology and ecology as an area of research. The award is very helpful to me as it has contributed towards the cost of a studio room for me on campus. My family live quite close to Exeter but I didn't want to live at home as I really wanted to develop my independence whilst still having my family close by for support. I’m really pleased that I achieved the grades needed to secure this award; it’s proof that hard work gets rewarded, and will motivate me to continue working hard and follow my ambitions.'

Recipient: Lucy
Lucy completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying BSc Marine Biology with Professional Placement.
'Marine biology is something that I have had a huge interest in for a long time and something that I always wanted to carry on as a career possibility. My particular area of interest is ecology and conservation and I had an amazing opportunity this summer to be able to do some marine conservation volunteering in Madagascar. This has made me even more enthusiastic about continuing this as a potential career in the future. On my course, which started September 2019 to June 2023, there are many field trips that take place, in which I am going to use this prize to help me pay for it, which I had not have been able to go on those trips if I hadn’t won this prize. When I had the option of winning this prize dependent on what results I got at college, it made me much more motivated to work harder and therefore lead into my grades being as good as they were. This has also allowed me to see that if I continue to work hard and continue to be ambitious, I can have a career in a subject that I am truly passionate about.'
The Tomacelli Scholarship
Donor: University of Exeter alumnus Eduardo Tomacelli (BA Politics 1986)
Amount: £3000 per year for three years
Awarding Criteria: The highest achieving Senior Scholar who has accepted an offer to study a STEMM degree programme
Recipient: Angel
Angel completed the Exeter Scholars South West pathway, and is now a first year undergraduate studying MSci Conservation Biology and Ecology.
'I'm studying the first year of my MSci in conservation, biology and ecology. My goal is to be able to complete this with a high grade, so I can go onto a PhD. I'm interested in the biological aspect of life and how we can maintain sustainability. I cannot wait to explore this in my masters. This award will allow me to fund more trips which would help me make connections that I wouldn't otherwise have. Moreover, it will help buy equipment to help me on those trips, so I can explore a range of environments. These connections may lead me onto projects that extend my career level further. Therefore, making me more present in the scientific community. This could have been less achievable without Exeter Scholars. Thank you very much for this. To have such a special donation means a lot to me. This will motivate me to try as hard as I have done to get here. This will make me the only person in my close family with a degree. That I'll be proud of.'
The Ben and Sheena Parker Scholarship
