Events & Activities
The events and activities detailed in this section are available to all Exeter Scholars participants, and, though optional, we would encourage you to consider taking part in at least one.
Attendance at one of these events can also count towards making up any missed subject activity strand sessions for those participants based within the south west.
This event is exclusively available to participants in Exeter Scholars and is particularly valuable for those who are interested in applying to study at the University of Exeter and haven’t had the opportunity to visit in person. It will run in the September of Year 13 and, as well as providing attendees with the chance to browse the University’s courses and support services such as accommodation, careers, and finance, it will also feature a live chat with expert staff from the Exeter Scholars team who can answer any questions you might have.
In 2017 this event featured bespoke presentations on student finance and personal statement writing, both of which participants told us were extremely helpful to them. Once available, the date for the 2018 event will be promoted in the Exeter Scholars e-newsletter, and details of how to take part will be added to the website.
We would encourage everyone considering applying to university to attend as many Open Days as they can to help narrow down what they like and don’t like about the different experiences offered by the institutions that they are considering.
Open Days are big events and have a lot going on, so for those of you that decide to attend the September University of Exeter Open Day in Year 13 we will be running a private Exeter Scholars reception to which you will be invited. The aim of this reception is to ensure that you have direct access to current University of Exeter students and expert staff members who can answer any questions you still have and to help you get the most out of your visit.
Unfortunately we are not able to refund travel costs associated with this event; however, refreshments will be provided on the day.
Most universities that you apply to will invite you to attend some form of visit day after they have made you an offer. At the University of Exeter we call these events Offer Holder Visit Days, and they usually take place in February and March after the UCAS application deadline has passed. Building on the experience you may have had at general undergraduate open days, these visits will give you the opportunity to find out, in considerably more detail, about the course you have applied for, the facilities available to you, and the Department that runs it. For this reason, they are an extremely useful tool in helping you to decide whether you wish to accept an offer or not.
For all Exeter Scholars participants who have fulfilled the minimum time commitment for their subject activity strand (either by attending subject activity sessions or participating in the summer residential) and have therefore successfully graduated from the programme, we are pleased to be able to offer you funding for all travel costs incurred by attending a University of Exeter Offer Holder Visit Day.
Freshers' Week, otherwise known as Welcome Week, is your chance to find out more about the student experiences available to you at your chosen university. Usually managed by the Students' Guild, you will be invited to take part in a jam-packed week of events and activities designed to help you familiarise yourself with your new home, try new things, and make new friends. It is an extremely busy week which starts with moving into your student accommodation. There is a lot to take in during Freshers' Week, and, in order to help you make the most of the settling in process, all Senior Scholars will be invited to attend a reception the week before you move to help you find your way around campus before everyone else arrives.
After the event, attendees will know exactly where they are going when they arrive with their belongings a week later and will know how to access the key support services available to University of Exeter students. We will also talk to you about the opportunity to become a University of Exeter Student Ambassador and give you some points on how to prepare for the application process and interview.
