Module description
Having completed two terms of study at the University of Exeter, students on MA Advanced Arabic, MA Middle East Politics and Advanced Arabic, and MA International Relations and Advanced Arabic will take this Study Abroad module, which involves spending 4 weeks in an Arabic-speaking country, attending an intensive language course at one of our partner institutions and practising Arabic in real life situations. This period of study abroad will significantly advance students’ fluency in spoken Arabic and knowledge of dialect, and will enable them to gain first-hand experience of Arab society and culture. During their time abroad, students will be supported both by colleagues in the study abroad institution and by a personal tutor from the IAIS (the latter via online media). Assessment will be in the form of assignments and exams set by the partner institution. Prerequisites: Advanced Arabic I., Advanced Arabic II.
Module aims - intentions of the module
This module aims to develop your Arabic language proficiency to Master’s level in the following areas: reading, writing, grammar, translation, speaking and listening. You will be exposed to a variety of written materials, for example from business, media, culture and politics, which you will read, analyse and translate under the guidance of your instructors. You will be able to deepen your knowledge of Arabic language and culture through living and studying in a host institute in an Arabic speaking country. Furthermore, you will develop your conversational skills through intensive use of an Arabic dialect abroad.

Syllabus plan
Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover some or all of the following topics:
1) Reading& Writing: You will tackle different types of texts, editorials, texts on history, current affairs, literature, etc. You will be introduced to different styles of writing, and you will further enhance your understanding of how to write professionally in Arabic.
2) Arabic culture: You will be introduced to different aspects of Arabic culture through living and studying in a natural linguistic and cultural environment in an Arabic speaking country.
3) Translation: You will become familiar with a range of text types by translating them effectively (and in a timely manner) from Arabic into English and from English into Arabic. You will also use your knowledge and skills to practice liaison interpreting in Arabic and English.
4) Listening &Speaking: You will further enhance your listening and speaking capabilities by participating in discussions and events at the host institutions.
